Biography

Erika Simons is an Australian lyric-coloratura soprano currently based in Germany. She has been a member of the ensemble of Theater Osnabrück since 14/15, singing the roles of Pamina in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Susanna in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Eliza Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY, Valencienne in DIE LUSTIGE WITWE, Gretchen in WILDSCHÜTZ, Frasquita in CARMEN, Agrippina in Telemann`s GERMANICUS, and the title role in Dostal`s Operetta CLIVIA.

Before this, Erika was a member of the prestigious Cologne Opera Studio for two seasons where she had the opportunity to sing in productions such as GIANNI SCHICCHI, PARSIFAL, RIGOLETTO, DIE FREISCHÜTZ, JAKOB LENZ, HANSEL & GRETEL, TOSCA, IL TABARRO and DIE GEZEICHNETEN. At the end of her second season in Cologne, the renowned German newspaper “Die Welt am Sonntag” named Erika “best newcomer of the season” for her role as Lise in Glass’ LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES.

Recent concert engagements include Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH, Haydn’s CREATION, Orff’s CARMINA BURANA and Mahler’s 4th SYMPHONY.

In 2017, Erika will make her role debuts as Gilda in RIGOLETTO and the title role in Traetta’s rarely performed Baroque masterpiece ANTIGONA.

Graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2010 with a Bachelor of Music and an Advanced Diploma of Opera, Erika went on to win Opera Foundation Australia’s coveted German Opera Scholarship in 2011. This enabled her to join the Cologne Opera Studio for their 2012/13 season. During her time at the Sydney Conservatorium, Erika performed the title roles in LES MAMELLES DE TIRESIAS and RODELINDA and was a soloist in PEER GYNT with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

As a participant in the 2014 Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Germany, Erika performed and recorded with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and gave a series of recitals including a Liederabend in Bayreuth.

Erika appears regularly as a soloist in a number of gala concerts including the Festival of Beautiful Voices and the Red Cross Galas of the Cologne Opera. As a member of the Australian Schubert Society, Erika often sings recitals and Liederabende in Germany and her home country Australia.
